What it is
Electivus is a brand-new holiday tradition to celebrate Election Day. It's a new democratic tradition where social dining meets civic responsibility.
We realized that all holidays have one commonality: sharing food with loved ones.
This election, Grubhub will sponsor a free meal for every group that votes together on Election Day.
By making Electivus a holiday tradition, we want to ensure it is not just celebrated this Election Day, but every Election Day.
A Brand New Holiday Tradition
Brands have a history of starting new holidays.
In fact in East Asia, the American holiday of Thanksgiving is a tradition because in 1974, a KFC manager there marketed KFC bucket chicken as a way to celebrate the holiday with loved ones.
Ever since, Thanksgiving has been celebrated there…with a bucket of KFC!
The Rules for the Electivus Meal
Any restaurant on Grubhub can serve an Electivus meal. But the meal must meet following guidelines.
Rule 1: Three's a Crowd
The Electivus meal has three courses, each one representing a branch of the U.S. government.
Course 1: Judicial Appetizer
The first course is of course an Appetizer, which represents the judicial branch of government. The appetizer represents the judicial branch because an appetizer's flavor is balanced and fair—laying the groundwork for the following two courses.
Course 2: Legislative Entree
The second course in Electivus is the Entre, which represents the legislative branch. The entre is the legislative branch because it leads the meal to determine its flavor profile, and the other courses are designed around it.
Course 3: Executive Dessert
The third course of the meal is dessert, which represents the executive branch. Like the executive branch, dessert's flavor is distinctive and strong, but it is not a leader.
The first two courses determine what is for dessert. Dessert does not determine the meal's flavor profile. It enforce it.
Rule 2: All Together Now
In Electivus, all courses are served simultaneously, to represent how all the branches of government must work together, not chronogically like a regular meal, but in unison.
Rule 3: The Equalizer
All courses must be the same portion size, representing how each branch of government is equally important to democracy.
Rule 4: Finish Your Food.
Electivus is not over until your group is done with its meal.
Warning: If any group fails to complete their Electivus meal, the meal is no longer free.
This reminds us that a successful democratic government is based on moderation. If your group wants an extra large entre for Electivus, they can have it...but your group will have to complete an extra large chocolate cake of the same size!
